Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2016 Collection Unveiled

The latest installment of perhaps the coolest charitable initiative in the world has finally, officially, been unveiled. Introducing the Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2016 collection.

The thirteenth iteration of the annual partnership between Nike and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland once again sees a handful of favorite Nike shoes designed by a handful of Doernbecher patients, past or present. Proceeds from the sale of each shoe and piece of apparel benefit the hospital, an arrangement that has raised $14 million for Doernbecher over the years.

This year’s collection introduces six new Doernbecher patients-turned-sneaker designers. Andy Grass, 11, created a bold, colorful Kyrie 2 inspired by all of the people who helped him during this recovery.

Braylin Soon, 10, tapped the Nike Air Huarache Ultra for her design. The shoe’s vibrant neon upper is inspired by Kermit the Frog, while colorful accents draw from the sights Braylin saw in New York.

Chase Swearingen, 14, used one of the Swoosh’s most acclaimed recent silhouettes as the canvas for his project: the Air Max Zero. The shoe’s blue upper and vivid green accents are rooted in Chase’s affinity for lighthouses and building blocks.

Chehayla Hyatt, 10, eschewed a conventional inspiration for her women’s Air Max Zero. Instead, she effectively applied stream of consciousness aesthetics to the shoe, “letting [her] mind barf all over the shoe!”

Corwin Carr, 12, loves airplanes. Big time. For his Stefan Janoski Max L, Corwin brought together airplane graphics, aerial imagery and a cool, clean purple-and-blue palette.

Damien Phillips, 10, got perhaps the biggest honor of the group, being given the opportunity to create his own take on the Air Jordan 7. Damien’s look draws from a guitar and the colors of the Chicago Bulls, yielding a new style that’s strikingly fresh, yet utterly Jordanesque.

The Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2016 collection releases December 17 on Nike.com, the Nike SNKRS app, and select Nike retailers nationwide. That includes Nike stores, and some partner retail locations like Shoe Palace, Villa and Mr Allen’s. One hundred percent of proceeds from the sales benefit Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
